The business of private investigation began over 150 years ago in the early 1800’s. In 1833, A French soldier by the name Eugene François started the first private investigation agency. He called it “Le Bureau des Renseignements Universels pour le commerce et l’Industrie” which means The Office of Intelligence. He was a former crook who hired crooks to help him solve crimes. He actually hired them fresh right from the prisons. Historians consider him to be the father of modern criminology and of the French police. He is credited in creating indelible ink and unalterable bond paper in his printing company. He is also credited in introducing a record keeping card index system, criminology, undercover work and ballistics to criminal investigations. Many of these techniques are still utilized by modern day investigators. He was not recognized by the French for a long time because of his criminal past. In 1850, Allen Pinkerton, opened the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the United States. The Pinkerton Detective Agency became famous by foiling a plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. The Pinkerton Detective Agency’s logo has an eye with the words “We never sleep”. The Logo is said to have inspired the words “private eye” Early in the 19th century many businessman hired Pinkerton security guards to handle strike details. They were actually hired to keep strikers and union officials out of the factories. They were hired by wealthy business owners and during the Homestead Strike of 1892 Pinkerton Security Officers were responsible for killing several people when they were enforcing strikebreaking rules. Pinkerton Private investigators were hired to locate and bring to justice the western outlaws Jesse James, the Reno brothers, and the Wild Bunch including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In police investigative work investigators use a card index system or computer data collecting a system that tracks perpetrators of crimes. The system tracks career criminal and their pedigree information such as, names, aliases past crimes, modus operandi or method of operating on file. Investigators use this file system for follow–up when new crimes are committed. Many times crimes are committed by the same people over and over again. By keeping good records investigators are able to draw on these index card files or electronic data bases to interview career criminals to help solve crimes. Criminology is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behavior in both the individual and in society. Areas of research in criminology include the incidence, forms, causes and consequences of crime, as well as social and governmental regulations and reaction to crime. Ballistics is the scientific study of the mechanics that deals with the flight, behavior, and effects of projectiles, especially bullets, gravity bombs, rockets, or the like; the science or art of designing and accelerating projectiles so as to achieve a desired performance. Private detectives and investigators assist individuals, businesses, and attorneys in conducting private and confidential investigations. They also can assist in criminal matters where private citizens hire a private investigator to perform a separate non –bias investigation into a criminal or civil matter. Sometimes private individuals lose confidence in the local police or prosecutors or believe that governmental investigations were conducted improperly or were mis-handled. They do this by finding and analyzing information. They re-interview witnesses and follow-up on new leads. Many times witnesses are reluctant to speak with police or prosecutors for fear of being implemented. They connect clues to uncover facts about legal, financial, or personal matters in the following areas: Some investigate computer crimes, such as identity theft, harassing e-mails, and illegal downloading of copyrighted material. They also provide assistance in criminal and civil liability cases, insurance claims and fraud cases, child custody and protection cases, missing-persons cases, premarital screening and matrimonial and infidelity investigations. They are sometimes hired to investigate individuals to prove or disprove infidelity. These cases are commonly known as “cheating spouse” investigations. Today private investigators are available to most American’s and are used frequently by individuals, attorney’s and insurance companies. They are able to conduct background checks and pre-employment screening, assist in criminal and civil investigations, find missing or lost persons and uncover fraud. Thanks for visiting our blog.
